On August 7, an investigation linked to M.U., who was found to have entered an entertainment venue armed, has yielded new information. During this process, two individuals, M.U. and A.G., were arrested in connection with a gun that was discovered buried under a cypress tree in the Alsancak area. Additionally, C.A., who was present in the venue on the night of the incident, was taken into custody and brought to court.
In court, police officer Mehmet Dağdelen from the Girne Judicial Branch stated that the investigation is ongoing. He reported that following investigations into M.U.’s entrance into the venue with a gun at his waist, further information regarding the location of the weapon was uncovered. He noted that the gun has been collected as evidence and will support the progress of the investigation.
Dağdelen noted that the investigation was expanded with A.G.’s arrest, mentioning that A.G. entered the TRNC for the first time and was discovered to have communicated with various foreign numbers shortly thereafter. The police indicated that some of these communications were encrypted, and they will investigate who was in contact and the contents used.
C.A.’s Statements Under Scrutiny
C.A. was questioned regarding allegations of making false statements after being summoned to the Girne Police Department as part of the investigation. C.A. claimed that his phone was broken and that he had given it to an unknown person for repair; however, during a search, it was found in his own vehicle.
When questioned about the explanation provided to police, C.A. stated that he would not give the password. It was recorded that many of his statements were not true, indicating that the investigation is ongoing.
Court Decisions
C.A., who appeared before the court, stated that he came to the TRNC for vacation, mentioned that his wife was pregnant, and that he would return to Turkey for a medical check-up. He admitted to being present at the entertainment venue on the night of the incident, asserting, “We are not criminals. This is our country; we would know how to escape.”
Judge Hazal Hacımulla made decisions to extend the detention periods. M.U. and A.G. were given a detention period of 8 days, while emphasizing that C.A.’s investigation has only just begun, ordered him to remain in police custody for 2 days.
