The Wednesday Market in Girne attracts significant attention from both locals and foreigners living in the city. However, the high prices at the market have drawn criticism from shoppers. Notably, black grapes, which are considered to have strong antioxidant properties, are selling for 200 TL per kilo. These high prices have led many citizens to change their shopping habits.
This week, Selim Gürdü, who visited the market, stated that while prices are generally acceptable, fruits and some vegetables are quite expensive. Gürdü remarked, “We used to leave the market with bags full of purchases; now we have to buy in small amounts. We hope for prices to drop.”
Another shopper, Gönül Tuğran, expressed that although they intended to shop when they arrived, they had to limit themselves to merely looking due to the high price levels. She voiced her concerns by saying, “There are high prices in many parts of the world, but it’s on another level here.”
Hasan Sağol emphasized that the market’s prices are almost the same as those in supermarkets, which he believes makes people’s visits pointless. “We used to fill our bags, but now we have to return home with empty bags,” he stated.
Ahmet Aşık complained about the high prices, mentioning that the increase in fuel prices has also impacted the food market. Aşık noted that vegetables, which were previously left in the fields for animals to eat, now have to be purchased and insisted that authorities should take action regarding this matter.
Sait Durdu managed to buy onions and potatoes but remarked that fruit prices are excessively high. “Especially the grapes priced at 200 TL are quite costly,” he said, expressing hopes for prices to fall to levels everyone can afford.
Mustafa Aktaş shared his disappointment regarding only being able to buy a few fruits at the market. He mentioned that even onion prices have reached 80 TL, pointing out that compared to prices in Turkey, the prices here are extremely high.
Some prices at the market include: strawberries at 350 TL, gınnap at 300 TL, bell peppers at 250 TL, and mangoes at 200 TL each. Additionally, sultani grapes and various other fruits are also sold at 200 TL.
In conclusion, the Wednesday Market in Girne offers a variety of product alternatives for shoppers but also sparks discussions due to high prices. Shoppers leave the market hoping for price reductions.
