The Nicosia Criminal Court sentenced Nigerian Okechukwu Charles Nelson to 2 years in prison for drug possession, distribution, and acquisition. The court’s decision was made considering the types of drugs the defendant possessed and the harmful effects of these crimes on society. It was emphasized that the prison sentence should serve as a deterrent.
The presiding judge highlighted an operation conducted on May 3, 2026, by the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate and the Crimes Prevention Branch of the Nicosia Police Department. During a search at the defendant’s residence in Gönyeli, 42 grams of cannabis, 700 milligrams of cocaine, and one drug pill were seized.
The court stated that such crimes pose a threat to public health, pointing out that drug offenses are a serious and widespread problem. The judge stressed the need for effective and deterrent sentences, keeping the public interest in mind in such cases.
The court president noted that cannabis is considered the mildest form of drug, while cocaine is one of the most dangerous types of drugs currently available. This fact was assessed as an adverse factor against the defendant in the eyes of the court.
Okechukwu Charles Nelson’s acceptance of his crimes and his contribution to justice were considered mitigating factors in the court. As a result, based on all the circumstances, he was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
