In recent discussions surrounding population and security issues in the TRNC, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that all necessary measures are being taken. He pointed out that the country’s population is approximately 500,000 and emphasized the security efforts being conducted in collaboration with the Republic of Turkey.
Üstel also highlighted investments aimed at strengthening the police force. During the past four years, he noted that 8,235 crimes were recorded, compared to 20,805 in the south during the same period. He questioned whether such a security meeting is needed in the southern region as well.
Speaking on a program broadcasted by BRT, Üstel stated that he maintains constant communication with the Police General Directorate and the Command of Security Forces, receiving necessary information; however, he emphasized that the opposition called for an extraordinary parliamentary meeting without considering these data. Üstel criticized such moves, especially during the busy tourism season, stating, “The public demands data.”
He affirmed that the TRNC is a secure country and that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure that security. Üstel expressed that they have achieved political stability and will make every effort to protect the public’s safety.
Recalling that 468 personnel were recruited for the police between 2015 and 2020, Üstel announced that since gaining their confidence in May 2022, they have hired 1,104 new staff. This reflects the government’s emphasis on security forces.
Üstel stated that the police force’s success rate in identifying criminals is quite high at 99.5%, compared to around 50% in the south. He added that more investment will be made in this area and that laws will be strengthened.
Regarding the issuance of licensed firearms, Üstel mentioned that permits are granted under certain conditions but raised the issue of firearms being present in every household in the south. He noted that the country is peaceful and that solutions are what is lacking.
He listed ongoing interior security efforts including combating human trafficking, border controls, and identifying undocumented individuals, expressing that the government is constantly working to ensure security.
During his visits to the regions of Boğaz, Ağırdağ, and Dikmen, Üstel underscored the spirit of cooperation within the National Unity Party. He reiterated his belief in participatory politics by meeting with local residents during his visits.
