TDP Chairman Zeki Çeler continued his criticism of the UBP-DP-YDP government during a television program he participated in. In his statements, he declared, “You cannot cover up poor practices by changing the election system.” The program, hosted by Bahar Sancar, also discussed topics such as the election system, mixed voting practices, foreign labor, economy, and health insurance.
Criticism Regarding Election Dates
Çeler evaluated the situation of holding general and local elections on the same day. He noted that such an implementation could cause serious confusion during the election process. He emphasized that allowing voters to cast their votes for various candidacies simultaneously could create a significant burden for both voters and the election process. He added, “You cannot impose more stress on society just to have lower costs,” warning that overlapping election dates could restrict democratic rights.
Responsibilities of Political Parties
Zeki Çeler stated that it is not the responsibility of political parties to change the election system in their favor, stressing the importance of gaining the public’s trust. He expressed that if parties want to be successful, they need to produce policies that resonate with the public. He remarked, “Continuing with poor governance and then trying to achieve political results by changing the election system is an affront to democracy.”
Addressing scientific studies on mixed voting as TDP, Çeler indicated that abolishing the current system could increase voter apathy. He also emphasized that elections must be won safely and that appropriate policies need to be produced to win the hearts of the public.
Highlighting Human Trafficking
Çeler also brought attention to the lack of oversight in foreign labor issues. He noted that a structure that presented itself as a consulting firm previously reached out to him, which he considered an attempt at human trafficking. As a former Minister of Labor and Social Security, he indicated that they have been combating such individuals and structures. Çeler stressed that forcing workers to work under poor conditions leads to serious issues regarding human rights.
Economic and Health Goals
Sharing his thoughts on economic policies, Çeler identified economy, health, and security as the primary issues faced by citizens. He stated that they aim for an economic model that strengthens public services while reshaping the private sector. He pointed out that increasing domestic production would reduce dependence on imports and thereby lower the cost of living.
He also mentioned that the general health insurance project is one of TDP’s primary objectives, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring that citizens have access to healthcare services regardless of their economic situation. He noted that by examining Turkey’s experiences in this area, a suitable model could be developed for Cyprus.
