The identity of a Jewish refugee who died in a British internment camp in Cyprus in 1948 has been identified 78 years later, a significant step in resolving a historical issue and shedding light on a story of loss.

According to a report by Cypress Mail, Israeli officials announced that they had located the grave of the refugee named Shlomo Haimson in a cemetery in Haifa. Haimson had attempted to escape from the Karaolos Internment Camp in Famagusta when he was shot by camp guards. He died just a few months before the establishment of the State of Israel.

After his death, Haimson’s body was buried in a graveyard in the village of Margo, a Jewish agricultural colony in Cyprus. When this cemetery was closed in 1970, his remains were moved to a new cemetery in Haifa without identification, leaving Haimson’s remains nameless.

Research conducted by the Israeli Army’s Directorate of Missing Persons, the Israeli Military Rabbinical Unit, the Ministry of Defense, and the Cyprus Jewish Prisoners Association led to the precise location of Haimson’s grave being determined. It was revealed that his remains were found in the refugee section of the cemetery, in the second row, grave number 11.
