Following a knife attack at a supermarket in Taşkınköy, the suspect M.B.K. was brought to court and arrested. The incident took place on August 3, after the suspect entered the country on July 30, at a metropolitan supermarket in Taşkınköy.
Incident Development and Arrest Process
During the hearing at the Nicosia District Court, serious charges were brought against M.B.K. These charges include “Attempted Murder”, “Grievous Bodily Harm”, and “Illegal Possession of a Knife”. The court initially granted a one-day detention order.
Concerning the incident, Ersan Yaran, Assistant Inspector of the Nicosia Police Department, stated that the suspect was previously acquainted with Z.A. and had an ongoing relationship with him. Yaran indicated that the suspect followed Z.A. inside the supermarket and stabbed him multiple times in the head, neck, chest, and abdominal areas with a 23-centimeter long knife.
Victim’s Health Condition Serious
Yaran reported that Z.A. suffered significant internal organ damage following the attack and underwent surgery for the second time, with his health condition remaining serious. As a result, it was mentioned that Z.A.’s statement has not yet been taken.
After the attack, M.B.K. attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by citizens. Following his capture, the suspect inflicted self-harm with the same knife. However, due to health conditions, he managed to escape for a while after the incident. After completing his treatment in the hospital, M.B.K. was arrested, and security forces continue to collect footage from security cameras along with investigative materials.
Considering Z.A.’s condition, the police emphasized that if the victim were to die, the suspect’s crime could be aggravated. The court decided to keep the suspect in detention at the police station for one day, taking into account that the investigation is ongoing.
