The Eastern Mediterranean University Academic Personnel Union (DAÜ-SEN) made a significant statement regarding the university’s administration, emphasizing that the crisis within the Board of Trustees (VYK) has paralyzed the university’s decision-making mechanisms and called on the government and the presidency to take responsibility.
DAÜ-SEN pointed out that the present situation has led to the VYK becoming unable to operate without bias. The union claimed that personal and political interests have taken precedence over the genuine needs of the university. They announced that the actions of some VYK members, who left the meeting after certain demands were not addressed, have negatively affected the operations within the institution.
In a development regarding the VYK, a proposal was brought up to dismiss the advisor of VYK President Şemi Bora. Following Bora’s refusal to accept this proposal on the grounds that it was against regulations, a group of members left the meeting. As a result, the meeting’s validity was undermined.
The union stated that such a management approach cannot demonstrate functional and merit-based governance, leading to difficulties in the decision-making processes. It was emphasized that “the incidents in the last two VYK meetings are not merely a disagreement over agenda items but a repetition of a management crisis.”
DAÜ-SEN claimed that the previous VYK was dismissed for not adhering to “political directives.” When the current president continued to operate in compliance with regulations, he faced backlash from some VYK members and government-aligned circles, with these developments having an impact on the university’s financial and academic issues.
The union mentioned that the management crisis is a process driven by the political balance calculations of the minister of education, alleging that President Tufan Erhürman has also contributed to this situation.
DAÜ-SEN called on VYK members to fulfill their responsibilities, reminding them that the university’s interests should be the priority. It was stressed that VYK members should prioritize the university’s benefits over personal interests.
Criticizing Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, the union raised issues regarding poor management of university problems and a lack of institutional leadership. It was indicated that matters such as the non-payment of research assistants’ salaries and the stagnation of academic promotions should be taken into account.
Finally, DAÜ-SEN urged the government and the presidency to share the responsibility for the ongoing crisis, emphasizing that the issues do not solely involve VYK members and highlighting the problems caused by political balance calculations within university governance.
In this context, DAÜ-SEN’s statements have shed significant light on the state of the management and academic crisis within Eastern Mediterranean University.
