The Civic Democracy Party (TDP) officials drew attention with their requests for statements directed to the Ministry of Education regarding the preparations for the new school year in Lefke. The TDP raised the question of which classes children would enter, especially concerning the opening of schools on September 15.
An announcement from the TDP Press Office provided details about the inspections conducted by a delegation led by General President Zeki Çeler at Lefke Gazi High School and Gemikonağı Erdal Abit Primary School. Çeler was accompanied by TDP Secretary for Foreign Relations and Digital Diplomacy Kemal Baykallı, Lefke District Chairman Turgut Karabetça, and Youth Organization Chairman Ali Azeri.
The delegation also met with the Lefke Tourism Association to exchange ideas about educational and infrastructure issues in the region. Çeler requested information regarding the developments related to the relocation of container classrooms at Lefke Gazi High School. It was stated that the Ministry of Education is in the evaluation process regarding the transfer of container classrooms to the area of Erdal Abit Primary School and the details of the infrastructure.
Time is Running Out for Educational Preparations
During the inspections, it was emphasized that work on the infrastructure preparations for approximately 30 container classrooms should continue, and that the earthquake resilience of the existing reinforced concrete structure must be checked. The tender process is expected to be completed by August 14. However, the TDP expressed concerns about how these works would be completed within the last month.
As schools are set to open on September 15, worries were raised regarding whether this preparation process would be completed on time. The TDP is requesting the Ministry of Education to provide a schedule concerning when the containers will be moved, the completion date of the infrastructure works, and the earthquake safety of the current building.
Concrete Solutions are Needed for the Future
The TDP Press Office reminded that the Ministry of Education announced on June 19 that Lefke Gazi High School would temporarily operate at Erdal Abit Primary School. However, criticizing that necessary preparations have not been completed in the elapsed time, they questioned why preparations have been delayed so significantly. Despite the stated date for where the students would be temporarily moved, questions were raised about the reasons for the late start of preparations.
Additionally, it was stated that children’s safety should not be left to last-minute planning. The Ministry of Education is requested to inform the public about this process and share a timeline for ongoing efforts. It was stated that the container classrooms should never become a permanent solution for education. It was emphasized that students’ educational experiences should be continued under permanent and safe structures.
Lastly, a call was made to the Ministry of Education to provide clear information regarding which school Lefke Gazi High School students would attend on the morning of September 15, which classes they would sit in, and how the safety of these classrooms would be guaranteed.
