The education system in Southern Cyprus is facing serious issues according to recent studies. It has been noted that 6 out of 10 students experience difficulties in reading. Moreover, more than half struggle to reach basic levels in mathematics and science.
The Politis newspaper, citing the Educational and Training Monitoring report prepared by the European Commission, highlighted that this situation points to overall problems in the quality of education. A striking statistic reveals that only 1.4% of students aged 15 possess advanced reading skills.
In mathematics, it was recorded that 53.2% of students in the same age group do not even meet the minimum competency level. This figure is set at 29.5% across the European Union (EU). In science subjects, the average of students with advanced skills is 2%, while the EU average stands at 6.9%.
Data regarding digital skills is also quite alarming. 59% of students are not even at a basic skills level. The report emphasizes that Southern Cyprus’s education system needs reform.
Finally, a statement from the Council of Europe called for Southern Cyprus to take necessary measures to develop students’ basic skills. It is believed that these educational problems could have negative effects on the wider community.
