In the past week, 15 fires in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) resulted in significant material losses. The total damage caused by the fires was determined to be 83 million 728 thousand 500 lira. The fires occurred between August 10-16 and were recorded by the Fire Department.
Regional Distribution of Fires
When looking at the regional distribution of the fires, Nicosia hosted the highest number of fire incidents. In the capital Nicosia, 4 fires occurred, followed by 3 in Kyrenia, 2 in Çağlayan, 2 in Dipkarpaz, 1 in Famagusta, and 1 in Güzelyurt. This indicates that the fires were significantly widespread.
Causes of the Fires
Possible causes of the fires include short circuits from electrical sources, cigarette butts thrown without being extinguished, sparks falling from electrical wires due to wind, and fuel leaks. Each of these causes suggests that the fires could have been preventable.
In addition to the fires, fire crews intervened in 19 different special service incidents during the same period. These incidents included rescuing a kid that had fallen into a well and getting kittens out of tight spots. Furthermore, transporting deceased individuals for autopsies was also on the crew’s agenda.
