A person who illegally imported and sold drugs to hospitals in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was caught following a tip-off. The relevant arrest occurred during a search at a medical supplies depot located in Minareliköy, near Nicosia. During the inspection, 14 packages of medication lacking import permits were discovered.
During the investigation, it was found that the suspect, identified as B.Ç., had illegally brought a total of 32 medications and syringes into the TRNC and sold 23 medical supplies worth 301,000 lira and 1,165 euros to three different hospitals. B.Ç. was brought before the court, where he could face a fine of 10 million lira and possible imprisonment for up to 6 months as part of his charges.
Operation and Findings
The operation conducted on August 14, 2026, based on intelligence gained by the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate, took place at the suspect’s business located in Minareliköy. The search confirmed the presence of drugs that should have been imported legally, and these were confiscated as evidence.
The police reported that the company was not registered with the Department of Pharmaceuticals and Pharmacy, and evidence showed that B.Ç. had engaged in drug sales without being a member of the Pharmacists’ Union. Based on the gathered information, B.Ç. acknowledged during questioning that drug use and drug sales in the TRNC are prohibited without the necessary legal permits.
Court Proceedings and Outcomes
Following the suspect’s statement, the police requested appropriate bail for B.Ç. The court ruled not only to prohibit B.Ç.’s exit from the country but also mandated that he report weekly. It was decided that B.Ç. could be released pending trial, provided he deposits 50,000 lira in cash bail and has a guarantor sign a bond of 500,000 lira.
This incident once again highlighted the importance of monitoring and regulation in the health sector in the TRNC. Efforts are ongoing to prevent such illegal activities that could affect public health.
