Local and Foreign Shoppers Come Together
The Wednesday Market in Girne continues to attract attention from local residents as well as foreigners living in the area. While various fruits and vegetables are sold at the market, concerns about the high prices are particularly prominent. Shoppers visiting the market state that they are looking for options that fit their budgets, while the fluctuating prices week to week leave them in a difficult position.
High Prices on the Shelves
Şener Özdevrim noted that he came to the Wednesday Market for shopping and mentioned that the prices are expensive. Özdevrim stated that last week the price of beans was 300 TL, while it has dropped to 200 TL this week, and it might rise to 400 TL next week. He expressed that he could not understand the reasons behind the instability of prices in his region compared to those in the south and requested oversight to address the issue.
Another shopper, Zeki Gümüşoğlu, shared similar complaints. He indicated that he came to buy vegetables at the market and emphasized that the price of tomatoes dropped from 100 TL one week to 30 TL the next. Gümüşoğlu argued that rising prices need to be controlled, adding that the prices of fruits are excessively high.
Restaurant operator Hıdır Kurnaz noted that among the most expensive products at the market this week were purple and white cabbage. Kurnaz stated that they have observed that prices generally decrease in the summer months when fresh products become more abundant on the shelves.
Mehmet Erkol mentioned that he roamed the market seeking quality products, noting that prices are not cheap but he does not compromise on quality. Erkol reacted to the high prices of onions and potatoes, stating that he can find potatoes at a more reasonable price at the market next to his home.
Shopper Şahin Osman Yıldız said he came to the market to meet his basic needs. Yıldız pointed out that the prices are not particularly cheap, especially for potatoes and onions, which he considers expensive. He articulated that prices change every week, and families with children are particularly struggling despite having two adults in the household.
Rıdvan Andiç mentioned that he preferred buying vegetables mainly due to the high prices of meat. He conveyed that the price of chili peppers at the market has risen significantly and he hesitates to purchase expensive items. It was emphasized that due to the decline in the value of money, consumers need to spend more cautiously.
