The Mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Şenkul, announced that the population of the city is estimated to be between 150,000 and 160,000. He highlighted that the population of Kyrenia fluctuates throughout the year, stating that the total population of the country can reach up to 900,000 during peak periods and hovers around 800,000 during quieter times.
In an interview with Yenidüzen newspaper, Şenkul mentioned that these estimates are based on data such as collected waste, consumed water, water meter readings, and the number of households. He stressed that the population figures provided by various official institutions are inconsistent and argued that a precise calculation of the population is necessary.
Şenkul pointed out that under such circumstances, neither he, the Prime Minister, nor the Minister of Interior can possess accurate information. “The only way to ascertain our population is through a census,” he said, proposing various methods for carrying out the census. He noted, “Whether it’s an indoor count, an outdoor count, or even a count from space, a definitive number must be provided.”
Recalling previous population censuses, Şenkul highlighted significant discrepancies among those figures. He pointed out that the figure announced last year was 590,000, which has now dropped to around 500,000 this year. He expressed a general disappointment over the unknown exact number of the population.
Additionally, he referenced the Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz’s statement that “we do not have accurate information” and stressed the necessity of a valid census to clarify the current situation.
Şenkul emphasized the need for clear population figures to identify existing problems and develop solutions, bringing this issue to the attention of official authorities.
