Government Changes Following the Maritime Disaster
In the wake of the maritime disaster off Kyrenia, Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı has been dismissed. Finance Minister Özdemir Berova will serve as acting minister. Acting on the instructions of Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Ministry Undersecretary Enver Öztürk, Ministry Director Mustafa Ambar, and Ports Department Director Emsal Emirzadeoğluları have also been removed from their positions. Murat Salel, the General Director of Coast Safety, has been appointed as the new Ministry Undersecretary.
The decision, published through the Official Gazette, is said to have taken immediate effect. This event is viewed as part of the political turmoil triggered by the sinking of a passenger ship in the city of Kyrenia on August 30.
Parliamentary Investigation Committee to be Formed
A parliamentary investigation committee regarding the maritime disaster is planned. Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that they have submitted a request to the Presidency of the Republic Assembly concerning this matter. Üstel stated that they have submitted a motion for the investigation of the accident and that those responsible will be held accountable in legal proceedings.
Meeting with the families of the missing at the Kyrenia Tourism Port, Üstel said, “As a government, we are submitting a research motion to the Republic Assembly for the investigation of this accident. We have made our application,” emphasizing that this demonstrates a shared will supported by both the government and the opposition.
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Chair Sıla Usar İncirli also announced that they have proposed the formation of a Parliamentary Investigation Committee to examine all dimensions of the accident. İncirli stated that the motion was submitted to the Assembly presidency the day before and that members of parliament have been informed.
İncirli stressed the importance of investigating whether any negligence occurred in the accident. She noted that Prime Minister Üstel has made a similar application and stressed that the process of establishing a Parliamentary Investigation Committee needs to be expedited with a common political will.
İncirli called for the Assembly to address the issue promptly and for an extraordinary meeting to be held, conveying the message that the process should not be delayed. These developments continue to affect the political atmosphere alongside the trauma caused by the maritime disaster.
