The death of an individual from the West Nile Virus in Southern Cyprus has raised alarms in Northern Cyprus. The Ministry of Health reported to the North that cases have increased in the southern part of the island, where one person has died. This situation necessitated urgent measures to enhance general health precautions.
It was noted that a 90-year-old individual lost their life after being diagnosed with West Nile Virus. Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Specialist Aristos Aristodimu stated that this patient had underlying health issues and explained that the West Nile Virus is an infection that can affect the nervous system.
As of Thursday evening, it was reported that 7 out of the 10 diagnosed West Nile Virus cases in Southern Cyprus have been confirmed, while 3 are considered potential cases. It was noted that 4 of these confirmed cases are being treated in the hospital.
The Ministry of Health of Northern Cyprus participated in a meeting to discuss the situations in Turkey and Southern Cyprus. During consultations held through the Bi-communal Health Committee, information was shared regarding the increasing number of West Nile Virus cases.
The ministry contacted the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia to share the latest developments regarding the increase in preventive measures. Following the identification of two patients in the border area of Nicosia, the Department of Primary Health Services and the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia decided to enhance precautions in the region.
The Ministry of Health requested that all municipalities across the island be informed through the Union of Municipalities, demanding that precautions be raised to the highest level. Thus, steps to protect public health are being strengthened.
