Prime Minister Ünal Ustel made significant statements regarding the political tension in Cyprus. On the 52nd anniversary of the Second Peace Operation, he responded to Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides’ calls for the return of Maras. Ustel noted that these demands do not align with the realities and stated that Christodoulides’ remarks disregard the historical and political truths of Cyprus.

Referring to the Greek leader’s claims of “we will return” and demands to “return Maras,” Ustel expressed that these were merely provocative statements and declared that he found this stance completely unacceptable. In a statement released by the Prime Ministry, more comprehensive remarks regarding Ustel’s position on this issue were included.

“I condemn the constantly hostile and misleading statements made by the President of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Christodoulides,” said Ustel, noting that such remarks will not lead to any progress in the resolution of the Cyprus issue. He also emphasized that the topic of returning Maras would only complicate the existing situation rather than contribute to the resolution of the Cyprus problem.

Ustel pointed out that, as in the past, the Greek leadership has sabotaged solution processes, which is why the issues between the two communities continue to persist. The Prime Minister stated that the hardships faced by the Turkish Cypriot people and the inhumane practices stem from both past and current Greek leaders.

Furthermore, Ustel stressed that the existence of two separate sovereign states in Cyprus can no longer be denied. “Christodoulides continues to make requests from the Turkish Cypriot people while turning a blind eye to this reality,” said Ustel, emphasizing that this situation not only undermines trust but also drives the resolution process into a deeper deadlock.

The Prime Minister asserted that the Greek administration must face the truth, pointing out that it is contradictory to engage in discussions about solutions on one hand while simultaneously obstructing cultural activities of the Turkish Cypriot people. Ustel cited attempts to prevent a music festival in Kyrenia Castle as an example and vehemently criticized such oppressive attitudes.

Ustel reiterated that no attack on the dignity, human rights, or state of the Turkish Cypriot people will be tolerated, whether in the past, present, or future.
