Celebration Ceremonies in Serdarlı
The 52nd anniversary of the liberation of Serdarlı and Famagusta was celebrated enthusiastically through various events. The ceremony in Serdarlı began with the laying of a wreath at the Atatürk Monument. A moment of silence was observed at the start of the ceremony, followed by the National Anthem, and flags were raised to the mast.
During the event, Hazal Ölmez recited a poem reflecting on Serdarlı’s liberation and the historical struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people. Following her, the Mayor of Geçitkale-Serdarlı, Halil Kasım, gave a speech regarding the significance of the day. He emphasized the value of freedom and expressed the excitement of celebrating this day together with the people of Serdarlı. He also mentioned that the Mehmetçik (Turkish soldiers) marked the region with freedom on August 14.
Events in Famagusta
In Famagusta, celebrations took place in two separate ceremonies. The first ceremony, held in front of the Victory Monument, included a moment of silence and the National Anthem, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. At the second ceremony on Polatpaşa Boulevard, Namık Kemal High School student Mustafa İlter Tahtacı recited a poem titled “Famagusta of August 15”.
Pte. Ahmet Özülkü from the 4th Infantry Regiment celebrated Famagusta’s title of “Gazi” (Veteran) and commemorated the martyrs. Famagusta Mayor Süleyman Uluçay shared information about the historical significance of the Baykal Tunnel and announced that it would soon be open for public visits. After the speeches, the Folk Dance team from Famagusta Municipality and tango groups performed. The ceremony concluded with an official parade.
