In an incident that took place in Lefkoşa, 43-year-old Ümit Ertuğrul has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison for assaulting his stepbrother, E.T., resulting in two broken teeth. During the assault, Ümit not only physically harmed his stepbrother but also caused damage to his residence.
During the hearing at the Lefkoşa Criminal Court, it was emphasized that the defendant’s actions were widespread and serious. The court also stated that the panic and fear experienced by the victim due to the nature of the crimes committed by the defendant was taken into account as an aggravating factor.
The judge highlighted the details of the incident, indicating that on April 18, 2026, around 6:10 PM, the defendant struck his stepbrother E.T. multiple times, leading to the breaking of two of his teeth. Following this attack, it was noted that the defendant caused damages worth 30,000 TL by breaking both the aluminum door and the refrigerator with an axe.
The court determined that Ümit Ertuğrul’s actions represented a serious violation against his stepbrother’s body and home. Additionally, given the increasing prevalence of violent crimes, it was made clear that tolerance for such behavior could not be expected.
Considering the fear experienced by the victim due to the defendant’s actions, the judge mentioned that the defendant’s apology and the absence of a prior criminal record for similar offenses were mitigating factors. As a result, the court sentenced the defendant to one year and six months in prison.
This case serves as a stark reminder that violence against women remains a significant issue in society, and the court reiterated the need for increased awareness within local communities.
