Recently, there have been significant changes in the military command hierarchy in Northern Cyprus. With the approval of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, appointment decisions published in the Official Gazette resulted in the reassignment of a total of 205 generals and admirals, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force commands.
Appointments of Lt. Gen. İnaltekin and Maj. Gen. Bilir
In the appointments made, Lt. Gen. Ertan İnaltekin, who served as the commander of the 7th Corps, was assigned to the command of the Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces. İnaltekin replaces Lt. Gen. Sebahattin Kılınç in this position, while Kılınç has been assigned to the Chief of General Staff’s command.
Additionally, there is also a significant change in the Security Forces Command. Maj. Gen. Şükrü Bilir, the former Director of Current Operations at the General Staff, has been appointed as the commander of the Security Forces, while the previous commander, Maj. Gen. İlker Görgülü, has been assigned to the 28th Mechanized Infantry Brigade Command.
New Era and Expectations
These appointments have brought about a profound change within the Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces and the Security Forces Command. The changes, which have sparked various discussions, also raised different views on the functioning of the military system. It has been emphasized that the President and Prime Minister hope these changes will bring benefits to Northern Cyprus.
