Cyprus Mail emphasizes that Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis is slowing the process regarding the Cyprus issue. According to the newspaper, despite Hristodulidis’ earlier statement in January that he was ready to start negotiations “next week,” he has recently lost his urgency on the matter.

Particularly notable is Hristodulidis’ cold approach to the transition process after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to the island. Cyprus Mail suggests that Hristodulidis has not taken sufficient steps regarding the 5+1 meeting and the restarting of negotiations.

The newspaper recalled Hristodulidis’ previous remarks about the intention to restart the UN’s peace initiative, indicating that this situation is fraught with contradictions. Holguin stated earlier this year that the UN would renew its efforts following Cyprus’ presidency’s end.

Moreover, it was noted that Hristodulidis mentioned he could immediately begin negotiations by addressing the situation at that time. However, the current process shows the opposite. Cyprus Mail stated that Hristodulidis has lost the seriousness that the Government should exhibit toward the peace process.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Guterres visited the island and held talks with the two leaders regarding future negotiations. However, even after these meetings, it appears Hristodulidis is not in a hurry to advance the process.

Hristodulidis’ proposal to meet with Erhürman only on August 26 is also noteworthy. The newspaper pointed out that no agreement has been reached regarding the opening of any border crossings since that date, questioning the leaders’ likelihood of coming together to make progress.

Cyprus Mail criticized Hristodulidis’ tendency to prolong the process and also harshly targeted the AKEL and DISI parties. The newspaper argued that instead of questioning this situation, the political parties have failed to exert any pressure on Hristodulidis.

Although it was noted that the former DISI leader Averof Neofitu has made a significant criticism, it was emphasized that the silence of other parties allows Hristodulidis to evade responsibility. Thus, Hristodulidis’ passive stance on the Cyprus issue is reinforced by the silence of political parties.

In conclusion, the newspaper stated that by adopting these attitudes, AKEL and DISI support Hristodulidis’ steps that promote division, asserting that this situation absolutely needs to be questioned. It appears that Hristodulidis is primarily catering to the demands of groups seeking support only during the election period.
