A case of sexual abuse that occurred at a school construction site in Nicosia has come to light after a 20-year-old male from Turkmenistan, Y.K., engaged in sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl. The incident took place inside the construction site, leading to the suspect being prosecuted in court.
The police reported that the incident, which occurred in 2025, was revealed after the girl’s mother examined her WhatsApp messages. After finding numerous messages, the mother learned that her daughter was in a relationship with the suspect and reported it to the police on August 15, 2026.
The suspect was arrested on the same day, and the duration of his detention has been extended for another 4 days. During this period, both the suspect and the victim will undergo a medical examination at the Psychiatric Hospital of Peace. While the judicial process continues, the police stated that the phones of both parties would be seized and examined as evidence.
Proceedings in Court
After hearing details about the incident, the court decided to extend the detention for another 4 days to obtain the medical reports. It has been reported by the police that the suspect provided a voluntary confession, although this confession has not yet been confirmed.
Lütfü Oflaz, Director of the General Secondary Education Department under the Ministry of National Education, stated that the incident occurred not at the school construction site but at an empty construction site outside the school. Oflaz emphasized that the Ministry has taken all necessary steps to clarify the incident and is closely monitoring the process.

Minister Oflaz reiterated that ensuring the safety and privacy of children is their top priority and emphasized that this is a situation where the public should show sensitivity. It is hoped that since the incident has been reported to the police and brought to judicial authorities, the investigation will proceed in the most effective manner possible.
