The auto repair industry is currently facing a stagnant period, exacerbated by rising spare parts prices. Hacı Mahmut Koruk, a well-known auto mechanic in Gazimağusa, discussed the situation in detail in an interview with Diyalog. He emphasized that the market is experiencing significant stagnation, primarily due to the high cost of living.
According to Koruk, as prices rise, citizens’ purchasing power has significantly declined, leading to postponed repair requests for vehicle issues. This situation negatively impacts the workload and financial conditions of mechanics.
Market Conditions and Spare Parts Prices
Koruk noted that spare parts are brought in through certain dealerships, which set their profit margins according to free market conditions. He mentioned that some dealerships add exaggerated profit margins to spare parts, with some products being sold at a markup of up to 1000%. These high prices make it difficult for customers to purchase.
Compared to Southern Cyprus, the higher prices of spare parts have led citizens to seek shopping options in the South, further deepening the stagnation in the sector. Koruk also highlighted the pressure created by electricity costs and taxes on small businesses, stating that the situation for the industry is increasingly worsening.
Personnel Challenges
Additionally, the difficulty in finding qualified local personnel to work in the industry has emerged as a significant issue. Koruk noted that young people’s interest in skilled trades has been declining, emphasizing that auto mechanics could be one of the best professions for the future. However, as long as young people do not turn to this field, the sector becomes increasingly dependent on foreign labor.
