Cypriot agricultural organizations have requested Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Christos Senekis to allocate water for potato producers. This demand arose in connection with the need to revise plans regarding water resource management.
According to reports by Haravgi newspaper, representatives from the agricultural organizations EKA and PEK met with Senekis to discuss issues related to agriculture and livestock. During the meeting, the impacts of climate change, water management, and drought were also addressed. The importance of water needs in the agricultural sector was reiterated.
PEK President Christos Papapetrou stated that the most urgent matter right now is the provision of water from the southern pipeline to potato producers. It is noted that this situation has resulted in only those producers with boreholes being able to farm, which negatively affects the planting process.
Papapetrou also indicated that the usage of boreholes increases costs and emphasized the pressure on underground water resources should not be overlooked. In this context, agricultural organizations highlighted that potatoes should be planted by September 15 at the latest and are expecting an urgent response to their water allocation requests.
It has been learned that Senekis instructed to reevaluate water reserves and to explore options for water allocation to potato producers. Thus, the water issue has gained greater significance for the future of the agricultural sector.
