European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made significant statements regarding the agriculture sector in Cyprus. It was reported that livestock farmers have been affected by foot-and-mouth disease, and there would be no compensation paid to farmers in Northern Cyprus due to this disease.
According to a report by Fileleftheros newspaper, Greek Cypriot Member of the European Parliament, Michalis Hacıpantelas, directed a question to von der Leyen on this matter. Hacıpantelas stated that the lack of compensation for farmers struggling with foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus would constitute an injustice.
Von der Leyen emphasized that she is aware of the situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, taking these complaints into consideration. She expressed that necessary measures to prevent and control the disease should be implemented in line with EU laws aimed at protecting animal health throughout Cyprus.
These statements have increased concerns among Greek Cypriot farmers regarding the issue of compensation, while uncertainties regarding the application of EU animal health laws in the region have also come to the forefront.
