The Wednesday Market held in Kyrenia has become a shopping hub not only for local residents but also for foreigners. The market, in particular, sees high demand for fresh fruit varieties. Among the products that intrigue foreign visitors are peaches, melons, cherries, grapes, and bananas.

Buyers’ Opinions
Some visitors have expressed their concerns regarding the prices, asserting they are too high for consumers. Mehmet Ali Birant, who came from London, mentioned that he finds the prices in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) more reasonable when compared to those in his own country, but he also highlighted that the prices for products like fresh green beans are excessively high.
Another buyer, Mehmet Ali, shared that their limited budget prevents them from purchasing many products. He pointed out that the cheapest items start at 200 TL and that these prices are straining their family budget.
Hikmet Koç commented on the diversity of prices but acknowledged that some product prices have increased. While he shared the difficulties of feeding his fourth child, he noted that market prices are often close to those at the market, indicating the need to be cautious while shopping. For example, while cherries are priced at 300 TL, onions are 55 TL in supermarkets, illustrating how the price levels are comparable.
Another shopper, Erkan Eminağa, stated that balancing their budget is challenging, making it nearly impossible to buy many items. He expressed disappointment over cherry prices being 300 TL, indicating that the market’s advantage lies in offering fresher products.
Widespread discussions among consumers also brought up criticisms regarding regulation on price increases and product deficiencies. Sertan Dinçkaya mentioned that prices change weekly, affecting purchasing power. He expressed concerns about insufficient regulations and suggested that some sellers have too much freedom in setting prices.
Commenting on the high prices, Serdar Karakaş pointed out that while basic necessities should be budget-friendly, markets are generally more affordable than supermarkets. However, he complained that supermarket prices rapidly equalize when shopping on market days.
