The National Unity Party (UBP) made a unanimous decision regarding its 18 mayoral candidates during a party council meeting held on August 28, 2026. Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced the names of the candidates and declared that a new era in local governance was beginning.
Among the announced mayoral candidates are Mehmet Aktunç from Nicosia, Koral Bozkurt from Famagusta, and Bekir Paşaoğlu from Kyrenia. Üstel provided explanations about the tasks and projects to be undertaken after December 6 and emphasized that the public would choose among the projects that would be presented to them on that date.
Prime Minister Üstel stated, “On December 6, our people will have to choose between empty talks and substantial projects,” expressing that their goal is to establish a municipal governance that addresses citizens’ problems and produces services. He pointed out that local governance is not merely about social media posts but rather about creating works that respond to the needs of the citizens.
Emphasis on Service-Oriented Governance
UBP Chairman Üstel provided information about the projects implemented in the past and said, “In the last five years, we have brought to life projects that were deemed impossible one by one.” He noted that airports, roads, and other major investments bear the signature of UBP, stating, “There are achievements in this country because UBP exists.”
Emphasizing that they will launch a strong municipal governance approach in the party’s election campaign, Üstel stated that citizens expect not just words from them, but tangible services. “We have nurtured roads instead of words, and achievements instead of gossip. Now it’s time for our municipalities…” he expressed as he prepared for the election process.
The Role of Women in Election Efforts
Prime Minister Üstel also attended a tea party organized by UBP’s Girne Women’s Branch along with his wife Zerrin Üstel. This event highlighted the efforts of women during the election period. Zerrin Üstel emphasized that women affiliated with UBP are actively carrying out election campaigns on the ground.
Addressing the work of the women’s branches, especially in Girne and various regions, Zerrin Üstel stated that the strong participation in this event reflects the belief and determination of women. She explained the services carried out thanks to the political stability provided by UBP.
