Three Diagnosed with West Nile Virus

Following tests conducted in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the detection of the West Nile Virus in three individuals prompted action from the Health Ministry. Health authorities have begun informing the public about the symptoms of the virus and methods of prevention, while local municipalities have intensified their fight against mosquitoes. Two patients were hospitalized due to complaints such as pain and fever, and their conditions have been reported as stable.

The Health Ministry stated that the two patients sought medical attention with symptoms including upper respiratory infection, sore throat, and fatigue, and virus tests confirmed their condition. Furthermore, the detection of the virus in a third individual during a routine blood test, who exhibits no symptoms, has raised concerns. Ministry officials announced that the conditions of the patients in treatment are improving.

Information on the Virus and Its Symptoms

The West Nile Virus is described as a viral disease transmitted to humans through Culex mosquitoes. Wild birds and mosquitoes are the primary carriers of the virus in nature, with humans considered the “dead-end hosts” in this cycle. According to the Health Ministry’s statements, approximately 80% of those infected with the virus do not show any symptoms, while the remaining 20% may experience flu-like symptoms.

Common symptoms of West Nile Fever include high fever, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and nausea. Additionally, it has been noted that in less than 1% of cases, a more severe form known as “neuroinvasive” can develop, leading to serious outcomes such as meningitis or encephalitis. Generally, older individuals and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.

While there is currently no direct treatment or vaccine for the virus, supportive treatment methods are recommended. The Health Ministry emphasizes that the most effective way to prevent infection is to avoid mosquito bites. In this regard, individuals are advised to regularly inspect their homes and workplaces and to eliminate areas with stagnant water.

Moreover, when going outdoors during peak mosquito hours, it is recommended to wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing and to use insect repellent products. Municipalities have begun monitoring mosquito breeding areas and increasing pest control efforts.

The Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality has conducted pest control in over 10,000 water sources during the summer months and is regularly checking areas for stagnant water. Other municipalities are also enhancing these measures, encouraging residents to clear their water sources and perform regular inspections.
