In a recent operation in Northern Cyprus, a Pakistani individual suspected of engaging in illegal human trafficking and Iranian migrants attempting to cross into Southern Cyprus were arrested. The incident occurred in the Haspolat region on August 28, 2026.
During the operation, a total of seven Iranian nationals, including two children, sought assistance from Z.A., a Pakistani individual who had facilitated their passage from Iran to Northern Cyprus via Turkey. Z.A. had received a total of 2,500 Euro to help these individuals transition to Southern Cyprus. Upon detection of the operation, the suspects were apprehended and subsequently referred to a military court in Nicosia.
Illegal Crossing Attempt
Police provided details of the investigation. It was noted that on August 25, 2026, around 04:30 AM, the Iranian suspects had secretly entered a military restricted area and were caught by the soldiers on guard. The individuals expressed that they had left their country due to war and wished to find jobs and work in Southern Cyprus.
During the police investigation, it was revealed that Z.A. had made an agreement for 2,250 Euro to facilitate the Iranians’ exit abroad. Furthermore, Z.A. had previously attracted attention for attempting illegal crossings into Southern Cyprus.
Judicial Process and Arrests
Various arrest warrants were issued for the suspects brought before the military court in Nicosia. Five Iranian nationals, along with the two children aged 12 and 14, will remain detained for six days at the former Ercan Detention Center, while Z.A. will stay in prison for up to 30 days. During this process, the court deemed it appropriate to impose a sentence on Z.A. considering his existing criminal record.
This incident highlights the ongoing importance of efforts against human trafficking and showcases the determination of law enforcement in addressing the issue.
