A 30-year-old man, identified as M.A.K., was arrested at Ercan Airport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on charges of possessing illegal drugs. The suspect was detained after being found with drug-laced cigarettes in his suitcase upon entering the airport. This incident occurred after the narcotics detection dog, Pamir, reacted to the suitcase.
The event took place on August 14, 2026, at approximately 21:50, when officers from the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate conducted a search of the suspect’s suitcase following Pamir’s alert. As a result of this search, a total of 10 handmade cigarettes containing a mixture of tobacco and cannabis were seized. The substances obtained were taken as evidence and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Following the incident, the suspect provided a confession-like statement to the police. However, the accuracy of this statement has yet to be verified, so further details remain unclear. Authorities indicated that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted regarding the suspect after the necessary procedures were completed.
The court evaluated the request for arrest and decided that M.A.K. should remain detained by the police for 3 days to ensure the investigation’s proper conduct. This arrest order was approved at the police’s request.
It was emphasized that incidents of this nature play a significant role in the country’s efforts to combat drug trafficking, and officials would continue their work in this regard. It was highlighted that measures against drug smuggling should be increased.
