The Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO) has underscored the urgent necessity for immediate measures to ensure electricity supply security in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Chamber pointed out that the recent increase in power outages has highlighted the structural challenges in electricity supply, particularly affecting tourism facilities and other businesses.
In an official statement, the negative impacts of the political and economic isolation imposed by the Republic of Turkey on Northern Cyprus were addressed, emphasizing that the continuity problems in electricity supply seriously threaten the country’s economic sustainability. It was noted that the rising electricity demand is incompatible with the current production infrastructure.
EMO stated that it is impossible to ensure energy supply security through temporary solutions, expressing the need for the development of permanent strategies to meet the country’s electricity needs. The necessity of increasing production capacity and strengthening the electricity grid was particularly emphasized.
Proposed Solutions
The statement also mentioned that a gas combined cycle power plant to be established by bringing natural gas from Turkey could be a significant alternative in electricity production with suitable capacity and technical planning. Such an investment was recorded as having the potential to significantly contribute to electricity supply security.
EMO called on authorities to expedite the implementation of a comprehensive energy plan, swiftly activate new production investments, and develop concrete projects related to natural gas supply. It stressed that this would make it possible to ensure a sustainable electricity supply.
Transparent Communication and Legal Regulations
EMO advocated for the transparency of the status of past studies on interconnection cable connections with the public. It also noted that investments aimed at strengthening the electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure should be accelerated. Urgent completion of necessary legal regulations for energy storage systems was requested.
The Chamber emphasized the need to establish effective legislation and monitoring mechanisms to regulate the environmental impacts of both batteries and energy storage systems. Furthermore, it stated that mechanisms for managing electricity demand during peak hours should be developed with incentives and information sharing.
EMO expressed its readiness to share technical and professional knowledge with all stakeholders, highlighting the importance of carrying out the necessary investments for the country’s energy future in a planned manner, considering the public good.
