On July 3, 2021, a major fire broke out in the mountainous area of Arakaba village in Limassol, leading to a 3-year prison sentence for an individual, who has now been proven innocent. This fire not only caused loss of life but also resulted in the destruction of an area of 44.49 square meters.
The Republic of Cyprus Court of Appeals made a significant ruling regarding a 67-year-old man, who had spent 3 years in prison since the fire and was originally sentenced to 8 years. The court concluded that the individual was innocent and that the previous conviction was flawed.
The Criminal Court had punished this individual by holding him responsible for the outbreak of the fire. However, the Appeals Court emphasized that there were no direct witnesses to the incident, pointing out that the conviction was based on circumstantial evidence.
