The Renewal Party (YDP) announced that it will not attend the committee meeting regarding the new election law, which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, organized by the Parliament’s Legal, Political Affairs, Foreign Relations and Defense Committee.
YDP Secretary-General Erşah Sabit Yılmaz stated in a written announcement that the YDP Central Executive Board had previously shown a favorable stance towards eliminating the mixed voting system, but stressed their opposition to holding two elections on the same date. Yılmaz expressed that this decision is not final and will be evaluated by the Party Assembly.
Yılmaz pointed out that the Party Assembly is expected to convene after the return of the General Chairman from abroad to make a clear decision on this matter, and stated that the current situation is characterized by uncertainty. Based on decisions made in past meetings, discussions are expected to continue.
Additionally, Yılmaz referred to Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s statement regarding holding two elections on the same date, noting that UBP and DP have reached an agreement on this issue. He stated that the number of deputies from both parties in Parliament is sufficient to make this decision.
The YDP’s decision to not participate in this meeting is seen as a significant step in the process of amending the election law. It is believed that the final decision the party makes could impact its strategies for the upcoming elections.
