Last week, 71 traffic accidents occurred in the Republic of Cyprus. As a result of these accidents, 27 people were injured, and tragically, 1 person lost their life. Police sources noted that this situation reflects the risks associated with the increased traffic during the summer months.
Detailed Analysis of the Accidents
According to a report prepared by the General Directorate of Police, 18 of the accidents resulted in injuries, while 1 led to a death, with the remaining 52 accidents involving property damage. The most common causes of accidents included speeding (20), careless driving (12), and failing to stop correctly at intersections while yielding to other drivers (16). Tailgating was also noted as a factor in 12 accidents, while other causes accounted for a total of 11 additional accidents.
The distribution of accidents across different districts is also significant data. In Nicosia, there were 22 accidents; in Famagusta, 20; in Kyrenia, 16; and in Morphou, there were 4 accidents. The Iskele region experienced 9 accidents. This distribution suggests a better understanding of traffic density and potential risks in specific areas.
Driver Violations and Inspections
In police inspections, 18,567 drivers were checked. As a result of these inspections, it was determined that legal action was initiated against 3,001 drivers. A total of 292 vehicles were banned from traffic, and 16 drivers were arrested.
The violation rates among drivers are also alarming. Common violations include speeding (987), reckless driving (19), and careless driving (33). Serious violations, such as driving unlicensed vehicles, driving without a valid driver’s license, and driving under the influence of alcohol, also led to a significant number of drivers being reported.
Additionally, lighter violations such as driving without a seatbelt (64), neglecting traffic signs and signals (143), and ignoring traffic lights (6) were frequently observed. This indicates a serious lack of compliance among drivers with traffic rules.
The diversity of reported offenses clearly demonstrates that a multi-faceted approach is required to ensure traffic safety. The police department aims to reduce traffic accidents by using this data to conduct targeted inspections and develop educational programs for drivers.
