A traffic accident that occurred in the Bağlar area of Ziyamet resulted in the death of 62-year-old Günay Kırlar. Following the accident, Kırlar was transported to Gazimağusa State Hospital, but despite all efforts, he could not be saved. This incident raises the number of fatalities due to traffic accidents this year to 27.
The accident took place on August 28, 2026, around 3:00 PM. According to police reports, the driver of the vehicle with license plate KE 516, Meryem Temiz, lost control of the steering while driving from Ziyamet towards Kumyalı. As the vehicle veered off the road, it collided with oncoming traffic, resulting in multiple injuries.
Among those injured were 16-year-old Ceren Nisa Artık, 24-year-old Meryem Güngör, and 18-year-old Yaren Artık, who were passengers in the KE 516 vehicle. Additionally, 72-year-old Mehmet Kırlar, the driver of the vehicle with license plate MP 494, and his passenger, 62-year-old Günay Kırlar, were also affected by the accident.
Günay Kırlar was transferred to the hospital immediately after the accident; unfortunately, medical interventions were unsuccessful, and he passed away. Treatments for the other injured parties are still ongoing, while the driver Meryem Temiz was arrested by the police following the accident.
Police authorities reported that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. This tragic occurrence highlights the increasing problem of traffic accidents experienced throughout the year.
