On August 30, two mothers who lost their lives in the “Filo Jet” tragedy off the coast of Girne harbor were laid to rest in their hometowns during funeral ceremonies. 62-year-old Nazmiye Özbolat was buried in Antakya, Hatay, while 58-year-old Elmas Demir was laid to rest in Eskişehir.
Nazmiye Özbolat was known as a mother of eight, and her remains were recovered during the search and rescue operations conducted after the accident. Her funeral was held in her hometown, with burial occurring in the Avsuyu neighborhood of Antakya following the noon prayers. The ceremony was attended by her son Ahmet Özbolat—one of the few survivors of the accident—along with other family members and Ülkü Alemdar, the Consul General of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Mersin.
It was noted that Özbolat had come to Cyprus for a wedding. As the family shared memories from her last days in Cyprus, the sorrow during the funeral was palpable. Following the burial, which saw a large turnout, Özbolat’s loved ones expressed deep grief.
Meanwhile, a funeral service was also conducted for Elmas Demir in Eskişehir. She was recognized as a mother of five, and her body was laid to rest with prayers after the noon service at the İlahiyat Mosque in the Fevziçakmak neighborhood of the Tepebaşı district. Attendees included Demir’s husband and children, as well as Deputy Governor Yakup Güney and other local officials.
Demir’s burial took place at the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Cemetery. The tears of her relatives led to emotional moments. The tragic event that claimed the lives of the two mothers left a significant impact on the families and underscored the depth of their sorrow.
The funerals of Nazmiye Özbolat and Elmas Demir, who perished in the Filo Jet disaster, became a source of deep sadness for their relatives, prompting widespread mourning within the community due to the loss felt by both families.
