President Tufan Erhürman announced that families awaiting news of their loved ones after the maritime tragedy off the coast of Girne are in deep pain and anger. He noted that the situation is extremely challenging, stating, “No matter where this issue leads, there will be accountability for all kinds of responsibilities.”
Accompanied by Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Erhürman inspected the search and rescue operations on-site and emphasized that efforts on the surface and underwater are continuing without interruption. The President also shared important information regarding the sunken vessel, reporting that an object has been detected at a depth of 550 meters underwater.
Erhürman expressed that the research process involves technical difficulties, and therefore, progress may be slow. Acknowledging the understandable pain and anger of the families, he said, “In all our communications, we will be with the families and strive to provide them with all necessary information.”
He further stated that underwater investigations are continuing with robotic assistance and that progress continues despite the currents. Emphasizing that claims related to the incident are being examined carefully, Erhürman indicated that definitive announcements will be made after the investigations are completed.
The President also highlighted that the ship operating in the area could function under nighttime conditions, stating, “I believe the Alemdar ship will make significant contributions here.”
