The State of Kuwait has decided to support the Missing Persons Committee (MPC) in Cyprus with a contribution of $50,000. With this donation, the total financial support provided by Kuwait to the MPC since 2014 has reached €243,750.
Purpose and Content of the Aid
In a statement made by the MPC, it was expressed that this donation would aid in the efforts to locate, identify, and deliver the remains of missing persons to their families. Additionally, the Missing Persons Committee aims to bring an end to the uncertainty that families of the missing have faced for many years.
History of the Project and Need for Support
The committee was established in 1981 under the auspices of the United Nations and has been working on the exhumation of remains of missing persons, identification, and their return to families since that time. The project has been actively implemented since 2006, with the European Union maintaining its position as the main financial supporter throughout this process.
So far, the identities of 1,081 missing persons, both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, have been identified, and the remains of these individuals have been handed over to their families following funeral ceremonies. However, this project conducted between the two communities needs support from donors to sustain its continuity.
