Hope is a tattoo artist from Cyprus and, in my opinion, carries many emotions reflecting the individual’s inner journey. We met last Friday evening. Hope has been trying to lead a healthy life by running and training in the mountains, but let’s not dwell on the moments of doubt when he drinks on a Friday evening. While talking throughout the night, his words, “On the day the flag rises in the mountains, this bad order may end; then we can be free,” reveal the depth of the issue.
Certainly, Cyprus has become a land of hope and escape. Living here has become difficult for many of us; we dream of finding roots in the memories of trees that carry freedom. While Hope carries a longing for the day this system will end, we question where each individual stands in the shadow of a future filled with natural beauty.
Many people are currently hoping to leave behind the memories of the past and build a new life. However, this challenging journey comes at an emotional cost. The uncertainties and fears continue amidst the political game of opposition against them.
In conclusion, living on this island seems to entail a loss, but each individual is trying not to lose their hope. Perhaps that is why Banksy’s message, “Get out while you can,” has become a reality for many living here.
