Following the capsizing of a passenger ship off the coast of Girne, one body has been recovered among the 20 missing individuals. The body identified as belonging to İsmail Kurt emerged as a result of the ongoing search efforts on the sea surface. The fate of the remaining 19 individuals remains uncertain, and their families continue to wait anxiously for news.
Search operations are being conducted by the Turkish Navy vessels TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar. During these efforts, the relatives of the missing individuals are gathered under tents set up at Girne Port, anxiously awaiting updates from the rescue teams. The emotional state of the families, focused on news coming from the search and rescue units, is palpable amid the crowded atmosphere of the port.
Security and Support Activities
The families of the missing persons are receiving support from the Girne Municipality and several other organizations. While search efforts continue at the port, water and food are being provided to meet the needs of the families. Moreover, psychologists from the Barış Mental Health Hospital are offering psychological support to help ease the families’ distress.
In relation to incidents of maritime disappearances, civilian ship services at Girne Port have been cautiously resumed. The entry and exit at the port are being monitored by the police. This situation does not undermine the seriousness of the ongoing search efforts for the missing persons.
Interventions and Investigations
In the aftermath of this incident that has drawn global attention, a delegation from Turkey, composed of experts from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, has arrived. Led by Durali İşler, the President of the Marine Accidents Investigation Branch of the Transport Safety Investigation Center, the team is conducting a technical investigation of the accident in Girne. It is reported that the team will prepare a report regarding the vessel named Filo Jet, which was involved in the accident.
In this context, with the support provided by Turkey, the technical and structural conditions of the involved ship will be thoroughly examined. The resulting report will then be submitted to the authorities of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Finally, President Tufan Erhürman met with the delegation to evaluate the ongoing operations and the search and rescue processes. Additionally, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel also had discussions with the team from Turkey to exchange information regarding the fate of the missing individuals and the progress of the situation.
