The number of people missing after the capsizing of the Filo Jet ferry during the Girne-Taşucu route has risen to 14. Following this incident, search and rescue operations are ongoing without interruption. Family members of the missing persons are waiting anxiously for news at tents set up at the Girne Tourism Port.
In the past two days, as the number of fatalities due to the sinking of the vessel has grown, efforts to locate the missing individuals have intensified. Teams are focusing on the wreckage located at a depth of approximately 554 meters in both sea and aerial operations.
Search and Rescue Operations Ongoing
The Turkish Navy’s TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar vessels are providing support for the search and rescue operations. During this process, numerous technical teams and underwater systems are actively working at the wreck site. Robotic systems are crucial for locating the missing persons and the black box that could shed light on the causes of the accident.
A total of 9 ships and 11 aircraft are involved in the search operations, while experienced underwater teams continue their work throughout the day. In addition to transportation efforts, DNA samples are also being collected concerning the missing individuals after the accident.
Families Continue to Wait
The families of those missing in the ferry accident are continuing their vigil at the tents set up in front of the port despite the warm weather. Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Hüseyin Çavuş has expressed his support by meeting with the families of the missing.
During this process, the Girne Municipality and other local authorities are providing various aids to meet the families’ food and water needs. Those hoping for the return of their loved ones are becoming increasingly anxious with each passing minute.
A 7-member team of experts from Turkey has also joined the efforts to provide guidance regarding the missing. They are facilitating social cohesion with the families while also offering psychosocial support to the relatives of the missing persons.
Of the 132 victims hospitalized after the accident, 131 have been discharged, while the fate of the missing remains uncertain. The developments during this process have caused families to endure an emotionally difficult time.
There is currently no clear information on when the search and rescue operations will conclude. At this point, the mobilization of all available resources by the teams is raising hopes for finding the missing individuals.
