Arrests for Illegal Residency
During immigration checks carried out in Lefkoşa and Gönyeli, eleven people were arrested for residing in the TRNC without permission. The suspects, identified as M.M.İ., M.K.A., K.O., M.A.M., A.U.R.U., S.E.A., A.J.M., Z.A., Q.K.Y., S.A., and M.J.I., were brought back to court.
During the checks, it was determined that these individuals were living without legal permission. The police requested an extension of the suspects’ detention period. Consequently, the court decided that the suspects would remain in custody for an additional eight days.
Investigation Ongoing
On Sunday, August 28, 2026, checks conducted in Gönyeli revealed that five individuals were residing illegally. The police also disclosed the duration of their stay. For instance, some suspects like M.K.A. and M.J.I. had been illegally present in the TRNC for extended periods.
Similar situations were reported for other individuals arrested in Lefkoşa. The suspects S.E.A. and A.J.M. had been living in the country illegally for a total of 272 days as of November 29, 2025. This led to a comprehensive investigation by the police.
The documents submitted by the police to the court included detailed records of the duration of the suspects’ illegal residency in the TRNC. The court also considered initiating an investigation regarding A.U.R.U.’s unauthorized workplace.
The extension of the suspects’ detention in police custody is contingent upon statements obtained from the Immigration Department and the completion of deportation procedures.
