In a ferry tragedy off the coast of Kyrenia, eight people lost their lives while 20 others are missing. Among the missing, the situation of 20-year-old Suleyman Erdogan stands out. Living in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with his family, Erdogan boarded the ferry to Mersin with a friend.
After the tragedy, his family, who have not heard from him, hopes that the search and rescue efforts yield results. Suleyman Erdogan’s 23-year-old sister, Asli Erdogan, stated that her brother was trying to help not only save his own life but also assist in evacuating other passengers.
According to information received, Erdogan noticed two young girls just as he was about to leave the ferry’s deck. He told his friend, “Wait,” and turned back to save one of the children. After successfully rescuing the first child, the young man faced the other side of the tragedy while trying to assist the second child.
Asli Erdogan shared that according to information received from loved ones, her brother made efforts to save the child. She learned that he called for help while handing the child to someone else. However, later they couldn’t find any information about whether he managed to get off the ferry.
Asli Erdogan said, “My brother saved the first child, but while trying to take the second, the ferry started sinking completely. We don’t know if he got out or not. We are worried about his life,” she said. The family continues to closely follow the search and rescue operations with the hope of finding Suleyman Erdogan and receiving good news about him.
