Divorce statistics in South Cyprus have notably increased. According to a report by Cyprus Mail, an average of six couples are divorcing daily, totaling 2,107 divorce cases as of 2024. This figure highlights a significant rise in the region’s divorce rate.
According to the published data, Nicosia had the highest divorce rate with 794 cases. Following this, Limassol recorded 575 divorces, while Larnaca had 397, Paphos 250, and Famagusta 91. This situation showcases the disparities in divorce rates among the cities.
Duration of Marriages and Causes of Divorce
Examining the details of the divorce cases reveals a variation in marriage durations. Research indicates that 33 couples divorced before completing their first year of marriage, while 130 divorces occurred in marriages lasting four years. Additionally, 143 divorce cases were identified in marriages lasting five years. Overall, the average duration of marriages that ended in divorce is determined to be 13.2 years.
It is noted that almost half of the divorces occurred among couples without children. Accordingly, 1,047 cases involved childless couples. On the other hand, challenges faced by families where only one child was present accounted for 541 divorce cases, and 397 cases involved families with two children.
Children’s Situation
In the examination of divorce cases over one year, it was found that a total of 1,638 children required care, with 537 of them aged between five and nine. Among couples with three children, there were 72 divorces; for couples with four children, 18 divorces were recorded, and three divorces occurred among couples with five or more children. This indicates the impact of divorce on children’s lives after separation.
