The General Directorate of Security (PGM) announced that there has been an uninterrupted decrease in the total crime and offense rates over the past two years. In particular, the decline in fatal traffic accidents and traffic-related fatalities has been significant, with the resolution rate of crimes reaching approximately 99.13%.
PGM emphasized that assessing the security situation should not rely solely on daily incidents or social media posts. Furthermore, it was highlighted that comparable official data should be taken into account when formulating security strategies.
The statement noted the sensitivity surrounding societal issues such as violence, armed assaults, traffic accidents, and violence against women must be acknowledged. It was stated that “no incident where even one person is harmed should be considered ordinary, trivial, or acceptable.”
Crime Rates and Assessments
PGM disclosed a significant decrease in the number of crimes and offenses during the data analysis period from January 1 to July 31, 2026. The number of crimes, which was 3,943 in 2021, has dropped to 2,751 in 2026. These figures reflect an approximate 30% reduction in the total number of crimes and offenses over the past two years.
Additionally, a roughly 15% drop in the total number of crimes and offenses was recorded between 2024-2025, followed by an 8% decrease from 2025-2026. PGM asserted that these results disproved claims that incidents involving crime were increasing uncontrollably.
Preventive Measures and Combatting Violence Against Women
The police indicated that intensive inspections and effective measures played a crucial role in preventing crimes and delivering offenders to justice. In particular, risk-oriented practices and visibility enhancement strategies were noted as key determinants of these positive outcomes.
Combatting violence against women is regarded as one of PGM’s top priorities. The ongoing efforts in this area demonstrate determination, and actions to ensure victim safety are being carried out swiftly. PGM is continuously striving to prevent violence and protect victims.
Traffic safety was also highlighted as a significant concern. The occurrence of 28 fatal accidents and 31 fatalities in the first seven months of 2023 indicated that PGM must enhance preventive measures. Data from the last four years show a consistent decrease in fatalities resulting from traffic accidents.
