Drusiotis’ Call for Support
Journalist and author Makarios Drusiotis has requested financial support due to the legal challenges he is facing after publishing his book, “Mafia State.” The three separate lawsuits filed against him due to the issues raised in the book have forced Drusiotis to engage in a significant legal battle.
In a call made via social media, Drusiotis expressed, “Help me defend the truth,” indicating he is seeking support. The fundraising campaign quickly garnered substantial attention, reporting that €50,000 was raised within the first 36 hours.
Controversies Surrounding the Campaign
The fundraising initiative led to a tense discussion between Cyprus’ Interior Minister Konstantinos Yoannu and Drusiotis. Minister Yoannu claimed that the campaign was launched without the necessary permits and requested the police to investigate the matter.
In response, Drusiotis pointed out that similar support campaigns in the past were conducted without obtaining permission. He asserted that his campaign, which was initiated in a similar manner to that of President Nikos Christodoulides, does not require legal approval.
Additionally, Drusiotis alleged attempts to silence him, sharing this concern on social media platforms. Interior Minister Yoannu emphasized that after the completion of the investigations regarding the campaign’s legal status, there might be no charges against Drusiotis.
The Union of Journalists also intervened in the debate concerning Drusiotis’ legal situation. The union expressed its concern over the circumstances the journalist is facing and highlighted the need for impartiality in the judiciary. The statement emphasized that arbitrary practices within the justice system must come to an end.
