Turkish Cypriots Face Discrimination and Challenges

The discrimination experienced by Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus reveals how alarming the social dynamics in the region have become. This situation leaves deep scars both individually and collectively, while the issues faced continue to be brought to light on international platforms.

International Attention on Turkish Cypriots’ Issues

As someone who served in the European Parliament a few years ago, I had the opportunity to firsthand experience the challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots regarding banking, employment, and citizenship. Despite having communicated these issues to both the European Union and the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, no lasting solutions have been implemented. Furthermore, the lack of adequate inclusion of the Turkish language in education and public services, despite it being an official language, exacerbates the seriousness of the problem.

Evaluations on the UN Report

In its report published last April, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination revealed that discriminatory attitudes towards Turkish Cypriots, along with migrants, refugees, and foreign workers, are widespread in the Republic of Cyprus. It states that hate speech is becoming increasingly normalized in society, and that some political figures are utilizing this as a tool.

The violation of citizenship rights of children born from mixed marriages of Turkish Cypriots is also highlighted in the report. This situation is seen as an indication of serious discrimination against Turkish Cypriots. Additionally, criticisms are directed towards the Republic of Cyprus for inadequate measures against hate speech. The inability to control such speech, particularly on social media and other communication channels, further raises the seriousness of the matter.

Discrimination in Language and Public Services

Moreover, the issue of language stands out as one of the biggest challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots. The exclusion of Turkish from courts and the education system, despite the Constitution of Cyprus, illustrates the extent of the discrimination Turkish Cypriots suffer in their daily lives. This deficiency hinders Turkish Cypriots’ ability to participate in public areas, the workforce, and education.

Furthermore, the inability of Turkish Cypriots to find employment in health and public sectors in Cyprus not only limits economic opportunities but also cultural interactions. It is emphasized that promoting multilingualism, which would bridge the two communities, is necessary.

In conclusion, the rights of Turkish Cypriots can only be somewhat improved through the revision of policies to be followed in this context and taking necessary steps. It is hoped that the active measures that the Republic of Cyprus will take against discrimination will contribute to bridging the gap between communities and fostering peace.
