Increase in Invalid Checks Observed
The Central Bank of the Republic of Cyprus announced that as of July 2026, a total of 16 invalid checks amounting to €40,799 have been issued by 9 individuals. This indicates a rise in bounced checks throughout the year. The bank provided comparative data with previous years to highlight the seriousness of the current situation.
Data from Previous Years
According to a report by Politis newspaper, the data provided by the Central Bank of Cyprus shows that in July of last year (2025), 30 invalid checks were issued with a total value of €42,715. In July 2024, 36 bounced checks were recorded, valued at €60,416. These annual comparisons reveal that the current figures are significantly high.
From January to July 2026, the total value of bounced checks has reached €288,489. During this period, a total of 101 checks were listed. The number of individuals who issued bounced checks was 70, with 48 classified as corporate entities and 22 as private individuals.
The figures for bounced checks in 2025 present a much higher amount. Last year, a total of 145 checks were issued, valued at €309,599. These increases depict a concerning picture regarding the economic situation.
The bank is adding this kind of data to a central information archive to initiate an evaluation process aimed at ensuring financial stability. The statements made serve to inform both individuals and corporate entities about potential risks.
