Initiative by Greek Authorities
According to news reported by the Fileleftheros newspaper, Greek officials were disturbed by these references to the Speaker of the Somali Parliament and swiftly took action. As a result of this initiative, a correction was issued by the Somali Foreign Ministry. The statement emphasized that this mention did not signify a change in Somalia’s foreign policy.
The Somali Foreign Ministry stressed that the speaker’s comments were a “personal communication” and should not be construed as recognition of the entity in northern Cyprus. This statement was seen as part of the Greek administration’s efforts to prevent the international recognition of the TRNC.
Statement on the Cyprus Issue
Furthermore, the Somali Foreign Ministry stated that their stance on the Cyprus issue remains unchanged. The statement from the ministry indicated that they would respect the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, in accordance with UN and Security Council resolutions. In this context, the commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus issue within the framework of the UN was reiterated.
