A Leader to Inspire the Youth
Sofia Christodoulou Makri, at the age of 27, has taken the helm of the Progressive Party of Working People (EDEK) in South Cyprus. Despite her young age, she was elected as the party leader with 1,191 votes, securing 53% of the support, reinforcing the role of youth in the political arena.
In the presidential elections, her closest rival Kyriakos Mavronikolas received 788 votes, accounting for 35%, while Giorgos Kouttoukis garnered only 246 votes, representing 11%. This election marks the beginning of a new era for EDEK.

After the election results were announced, Christodoulou Makri emphasized the importance of the trust placed in her, asserting the significant responsibility she now holds. “I will make every effort to honor this historic party and its proud world of EDEK,” she said.
Sharing her vision for the party, the new leader expressed her determination to uphold the legacy of EDEK’s founder, Vassos Lyssarides. “I want to see a strong, united, and modern EDEK. I am the President of all EDEK members and supporters,” she called for unity.
Lastly, Christodoulou Makri promised hard work and dedication, indicating that she has an optimistic vision for the party’s future. She is committed to doing her utmost for the growth of EDEK in this new term.
